SVP statement in response to the ‘Streamlined Asylum Process’

We welcome moves to address the asylum backlog, which is leaving many in a state of limbo and insecurity. But we are concerned that the new Streamlined Asylum Process will leave many at risk.

The new process will allow 20 days for asylum seekers to complete a questionnaire in English to make their claim for protection. This will leave thousands of people at risk of not having their claim assessed fairly.

The SVP continues to advocate for a fair and efficient asylum system which can protect vulnerable people in need. Our experience of supporting asylum seekers and refugees has taught us the importance of listening.

A short questionnaire will not allow people who have experienced trauma, hardship and violence and have thus been forced to flee their own countries, to accurately make their claim for protection. In addition, the lack of legal support available risks creating a two-tier of asylum seekers: those who have access to expert advice, and those who don’t.

We urge the Government to tackle the asylum backlog, but to do so in a way which respects people’s right to a fair assessment of their claim.
