Following careful consideration by the SVP leadership team and Board, a decision has been made to close St Vincent’s Centre Brixton and place the building up for sale.
We understand that this news may be disappointing for many people who have used and supported the centre over the years and this decision has not been taken lightly.
However, the significant costs associated with operating such a large building, the ongoing challenges of securing sustainable funding in London and the Centre's location have made it increasingly difficult for the site to develop into the thriving community hub we had hoped and envisaged.
The centre will continue to deliver the current community activities until the end of July when funding for these services comes to an end and existing room hirers will also be able to continue using the centre until the property is sold.
The building will be marketed for sale with its existing community-use designation and we hope this will help create opportunities for the site to continue serving local people and remain a valuable community asset in the future.
We would like to thank everyone who has been part of the Centre's journey and express our sincere gratitude for the support, involvement and understanding shown by the local community.

A vibrant community hub set in the beating heart of Brixton, that welcomes everyone, connecting people of all ages and backgrounds, providing accessible arts activities that support creativity and learning, as well as practical support such as food and advice, in a warm heritage rich space that aims to promote mental health and well-being for people living in and around Brixton.
My son really loves coming to the sessions. It gives him something that he feels is his own, where he can feel a sense of independence and belonging, alongside enjoying the activities which all align with his interests. Thank you so much for all you do!
Great space for children to learn and explore friendships.
Kids are coming back from the sessions very happy.
His self esteem and confidence has grown.
[My young person] has only been there once so too early to say, but she definitely enjoyed the day she went, and will certainly be coming back! It was great seeing her playing on the piano when we went too.
Was impressed with the warmth of the staff (especially Leanne), and it’s a lovely venue!
My children 12 and 14 have really enjoyed being part of the group, lots of positive feedback from them and they have fun at the sessions (drama).
St Vincent's Brixton is a community centre run by the St Vincent de Paul Society (England and Wales). The SVP works with people and communities offering practical help, general support and friendship to the lonely, hungry, homeless and vulnerable.
We can carry out this work thanks to the dedication of our volunteer members.
At St Vincent's Brixton, we offer meaningful and long-term befriending. We have a particular focus on young people, older adults and refugee and asylum seeker communities, offering a range of activities designed to support educational, personal and social development in a safe and supportive environment.
We also provide two multi-use halls suitable for hiring for community group meetings, fitness and wellbeing workshops, theatre and music rehearsals.
If you would like to hire a hall, please email our Centre Officer janedr@svp.org.uk to enquire and book.
Everyone is welcome to join our free activities for young and old. This summer we will be running our Adult Sewing Bee for new participants, Tai Chi and Thursday Art Group. For more information please contact the Centre Officer.
