What is Lent?
Lent is the period of 40 days which comes before Easter in the Christian calendar. Beginning on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday, he day before Easter. Lent is a season of reflection and preparation before the celebrations of Easter. By observing the 40 days of Lent, Christians replicate Jesus Christ's sacrifice and withdrawal into the desert for 40 days in preparation for his ministry.
This year Lent begins on Wednesday, 17th February 2021.
The traditional practices of Lent, drawn from Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, are prayer (Matthew 6:5–15), almsgiving (Matthew–4), and fasting (Matthew 6:16–18).
The key to fruitful observance of these practices is to recognise their link to baptismal renewal. We are called not just to abstain from sin during Lent, but to true conversion of our hearts and minds as followers of Christ. We recall those waters in which we were baptised into Christ’s death, died to sin and evil, and began new life in Christ.
