Thousands of lives have been affected by catastrophic floods in the southern Indian state of Kerala. This map is based on the most recent information received from our SVP contacts in the region and shows the severity of the flooding in each area.
You can help us get vital funds to where they are most needed by donating to our SVP Kerala Emergency Appeal. Around £370,000 has been received to date and is being used to help people return to their homes and begin to rebuild their lives.
With a network of 3,900 SVP groups in Kerala, SVP England and Wales is channeling donations directly to local volunteers on the ground, so that they can get funds and materials to those people who have been injured or displaced by the floods and help them rebuild their communities and lives.
Help such as food, clothing, medicine and sanitary products is being distributed by local SVP volunteers. Our volunteers are also liaising with parishes to provide emergency shelter for people who have lost everything.
Johnson Varghese, National President of the SVP in India said: “The SVP has been extremely busy working with local fisherman to help rescue people trapped in flooded homes. SVP volunteers are collecting and coordinating the distribution of aid materials, using resources available from donations together with their own money to buy vital goods.
"We desperately need donations as the rescue effort goes on. As people move back to their damaged homes, we’ll be using funds to help rebuild their houses, purchase household utensils, provide school materials such as uniforms, books, and even livestock to replace lost farm animals.”
