Kerala in southern India has been affected by some of the worst monsoon rains in over a century, resulting in major flooding and, in turn, the displacement of over 1,000,000 people, and over 400 hundred lives lost. Many individuals have yet to be found. Families have been left without homes and businesses with no way to rebuild.
The Indian army, authorities and local volunteers have been on hand providing as much safe drinking water as they can, together with food and medical supplies, and charities are out on the frontline. However, a great deal of restoration work lies ahead, once the floods have dissipated. The severity of the flooding in each area is shown on this map which is based on the most recent information received directly from our SVP Central Council contacts in the region. Your support is needed to help rebuild lives as well as homes.
The St Vincent de Paul Society is present across the world with volunteer groups in over 150 countries; in India there are over 7,200 SVP groups of which 3,900 are active in Kerala. Many of our parish volunteer groups in England and Wales are “twinned” with those in Kerala, providing support through solidarity, donations and prayer. It is a fraternal relationship between the Society in England and Wales and India, one that has existed since the first twins in the 1960s and continues to this day. The Society in Kerala is particularly well placed to help those affected by the disaster both now and in the long term.
Our SVP Overseas Aid Team is looking to raise a considerable sum to enable the SVP in India to assist those affected by the floods. Around £370,000 has been raised to date.
