Jack is a former rough sleeper who struggled to get back to work. His local St Vincent's centre helped him gain the skills and confidence to find a job through its employability training programme.
Jack was a rough sleeper with a dependency on drugs. By the time he sought support from a St Vincent's centre, Jack had started to turn his life around. He had quit drugs and was no longer homeless, however he was experiencing serious mental health issues and he was struggling to keep a job.
Jack started volunteering four days-a-week in the SVP community café. His confidence started to grow and his positivity increased. The SVP team suggested he attend an employability course to develop his academic skills, which gave him the knowledge to compose his CV and write a covering letter. Jack secured work as a caretaker at his local St Vincent’s centre and continues to look for work elsewhere.
The SVP runs employability training programmes at many of its St Vincent’s centres. The courses support adults to get back to work after long periods of unemployment, and also help individuals who are struggling to find work due to physical or mental disabilities. The courses boost confidence, feed self-empowerment and feelings of self-worth.
Every member of our communities deserves the opportunity to find meaningful work and give something back to the area in which they live. Jack knows this, and now his future looks brighter and is in his hands.
We need your support
St Vincent's centres in Leeds, Bradford and Newcastle are seeking help in a bid to access funds from the £500,000 LNER Customer and Community Investment Fund, which supports people like Jack to find meaningful paid work.
The SVP project bid, Expanding Horizons, aims to help marginalised adults who are currently not in paid employment, including people experiencing homelessness, ex-offenders, people with refugee or asylum seeker status, and people who are unemployed and facing financial difficulties exacerbated by the pandemic.
