SVP TWINNAGE SUDAN SPONSORSHIP APPEAL UPDATE

The SVP's Sudan Sponsorship Appeal was launched in mid-2006 and will be an ongoing appeal. Support from members and the wider community has been overwhelming with over £300,000 committed so far across the next five years. Without the support of this appeal a number of the SVP's projects in Sudan would have to close. The appeal is already having a very real impact.

Baby Feeding Programme

Baby Feeding Programme - £35 per year per baby

The SVP runs 18 baby-feeding centres located at the heart of the semi-permnent displaced person camps around Khartoum . This year there are 9,128 babies and young children registered to receive food at the centres. Many are brought to the centres by siblings barely older than themselves and equally in need of nourishment. No one is turned away and the true figure is over 12,000. Referred to as 'supplementary feeding', this meal is likely to be the only food the children receive all day. The programme makes the difference between a child living until tomorrow or a parent having to bury their baby.

Street Children Programme

Street Children Programme

  • £150 per year for primary education
  • £200 per year for secondary education
  • £175 per year to feed an orphan

The civil war and ongoing hostilities in Sudan have torn hundreds of thousands of families apart. Children from these broken families are forced onto the streets where they face many dangers. The SVP runs seven homes and two farms which aim to provide a secure family environment for these children. The children receive shelter, education, clothing, food, medical care and counselling when required. Most importantly, this programme enables these children to enjoy a childhood which circumstance would otherwise take from them. Last year nearly 600 street children were helped by the programme.

Medical Programme

Medical Programme - £100 to provide 50 medical treatments

The SVP operates two mobile clinics and three permanent. The permanent clinics are open each Friday as this is the day of rest in Sudan and doctors are able to volunteer their time. Approximately 300 individuals are treated at the Friday clinics each week. The two mobile clinics which operate five days per week visit 78 schools for displaced children. There are only two members of staff at each clinic but their commitment means an average of 1,400 individuals receive medical treatment at each clinic per month: over 30,000 medical treatments per year. Although many of the conditions treated are extremely common, such as diarrhoea or dehydration, without treatment they can be fatal.

Vocational Training Programme

Vocational Training Programme - £95 per year for professional training

The vocational training programme teaches those displaced by the civil war to learn new skills which will enable them to support themselves and their families in the future. The Society runs five Community Development Centres through which they offer over forty different training workshops. Courses last six months and include masonry, carpentry, tailoring and welding. Last year 41% of those completing a training course went straight into paid employment. There are currently around 2,500 individuals benefiting from this programme.

Unlike the majority of the other international organisations working in Sudan, the SVP's programmes are run entirely by Sudanese people with the local knowledge and first hand experience of the culture and circumstances of those in need. The need for these programmes has been identified at a grass root level by people who witness the devastation caused by the civil war every day.

Despite the ostensible peace agreement signed in 2005, Sudan is yet to reap the benefits. Parts of the country remain politically unstable and extremely dangerous with internal hostilities posing great danger. In reality, repatriation is unlikely to be possible for several more years and even then the process will be a slow one.

The SVP Sudan Sponsorship Appeal aims to provide ongoing support for the people of Sudan for as long as it is required. Over 1,100 sponsorships have already been taken up and every single one is making a difference.
