Get ready for Silver Sunday!

As Part of “Every Older Person Matters Policy” Westminster Council will be coordinating the promotion of Silver Sunday, a day in the national calendar – similar to Mothering Sunday – to celebrate older people. It is hoped that this will be a day when local councils, religious groups, charities and a wide range of community organisations and individuals will hold events for older people.

Silver Sunday will be taking place on the third Sunday in November, which this year falls on 16th November. The idea of Silver Sunday grew from having witnessed the sheer joy and delight of the 1000 older Westminster people who attended a free Tea Dance which Westminster Council held for them last autumn in one of London’s top hotels.

The day will complement the earlier United Nations ‘Older People’s Day’ initiative and Age Concern’s ‘Grandparents’ Day’ , both of which aim to involve young people across the land in celebrating and valuing our older people and both of which take place in the first week of October.

The organisers of Silver Sunday are now looking to encourage others to hold events for older people across the country and to involve all communities in devising and organising local, free entertainment for the particular enjoyment of older people. Such events can be anything from a lunch, a tea, a theatre trip, a golf day, a stately home visit, a street party, a tea dance, a coach trip, a hairdressing session or a trip to a health club. The list is endless - but all will involve the energy, commitment and sponsorship, however small, of many to make it happen.
