Sit-in and Rock the Boat Campaign
"Men are afraid to rock the boat in which they hope to drift safely through life's currents, when, actually, the boat is stuck on a sandbar. They would be better off to rock the boat and try to shake it loose."
Thomas Szasz
September 24 th to 28 th 2007 hosts the Sit-in and Rock the Boat campaign. The St Vincent de Paul Society and Depaul Trust are sitting down together to speak out with one voice against poverty.
Every day the SVP gives practical support to thousands of people in need. Every day the Depaul Trust helps the homeless community across the UK . But now we're doing something a bit different and together we can make a real difference. Let's get people to do something about the poverty on our doorsteps. Let's rock the boat. Together we could turn the tide for change.
Supporters of the Sit-in and Rock the Boat campaign will be staging a protest sit-in in the SVP's community shops across the country. From around 2pm until 7.30pm (times vary depending on the location) supporters will be sitting in shop windows and speaking out against poverty. The sit-in will raise awareness about the disadvantages faced by people in our own communities. It will show people some of the ways in which the Vincentian Family is addressing this need. And it will raise money to be used to help people in need set up homes for themselves and their families.
SVP members and their families can support the campaign in several ways:
- Take part in the actual sit-in
- Help promote the campaign in your parish / place of work / community
- Sponsor those taking part in the sit-in
- Fundraise for the campaign even if you can't actually take part
