There is a light that will never go out...
It is with deepest regret that we announce the following death:
Pat Pleydell
Pat was an active member of St Etheldreda, Ely’s conference of the SVP. She was a member alongside her local commitments to the District and parish councils. These local connections brought a wealth of information and help to parishioners. She instigated the green cross boxes for the elderly enabling paramedics to gain instant drug and other information for the patients they were attending. Through her District council connections she enabled the St Etheldreda’s SVP Christmas hamper distribution to go to the right homes. It was in the Autumn of last year that she asked me to take her to the conference meetings as she was getting worried about driving across the narrow fenland roads. Alas this never happened as she became ill soon afterwards and was herself on the list of the sick to be visited, instead of being a visitor. She bore her illness bravely and to the last kept giving me orders for my wife’s marmalade which she loved so much. She gave away her hens and settled down. She died early spring. Her ashes were scattered in the small wood she had pioneered behind her cottage, in her beloved village of Coveney, which over-looks the fens and Ely (Anglican) Cathedral, which she had grown to love. She was an enthusiastic guide in the Cathedral for many years, sharing her love of the building with her love of the fens and with a wealth of local knowledge she entertained hundreds of visitors, imparting her own, very special, pieces of history and legend, alongside the official Anglican version. Her packed Requiem Mass, in the parish church of St Etheldreda, was attended by local dignitaries, citizens and parishioners alongside her family and friends. She was a truly adopted “Fen Tiger” and is very much missed in all her circles.
