ObituariesThere is a light that will never go out...

It is with deepest regret that we announce the following death:

Cynthia King

Mrs Cynthia King, one of the oldest active member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, recently died just a few days short of her 93rd birthday.

With Bishop Peter in 2005 celebrating 40 years of the SVP in MarlowCynthia was a Classical Scholar, linguist and Teacher, whose last post was at Wycombe High School for Girls, where she was held in high regard by staff and pupils alike. Characteristically, Cynthia was modest about her extraordinary talents; few people knew that as a young woman soldier during the war she was one of the team that helped to crack the Enigma Code at Bletchley Park .

In retirement, Cynthia travelled extensively making good use of her language skills. She was wont to invite Eastern European families to come to live with her in Marlow whilst they sought work in the UK. As an Anglican, she looked for further ways to practice works of mercy, and joined the SVP at St. Peter's Church to achieve this. She embraced the team ethic of the SVP, where a few working together can achieve much more to relieve hardship than can an individual. In true ecumenical style she also recruited several other Anglicans into the SVP.

She was still active at 92, often phoning fellow members to carry out home visits or to take the infirm to hospital appointments and the like. If Cynthia asked you, you did it! She will forever remain in the memory of both the Anglican and Catholic communities in Marlow.

June 2007

Please pray for the repose of her soul.

MAY SHE REST IN PEACE
