ObituariesThere is a light that will never go out...

It is with deepest regret that we announce the following death:

Austin Hughes 1926-2007

Austin was born 18th August 1926 in Seaforth, in the north of Liverpool. His father was in the Merchant Navy and he would often recall the happy times at home when his father returned after a long time away at sea.

After primary school he attended St Mary's College, Crosby before going on to teacher training at St Mary's, Strawberry Hill. He first taught at Star of the Sea , where he had himself been a pupil. After moving to various schools on Merseyside he spent the final 12 years of his teaching career as head of St Monica's in Bootle.

The work of the SVP was always of great importance to him; he joined it in 1956 and remained an active member for 50 years until he was too weak to attend the meetings. His views and advice were always sought and appreciated.

His passion for social justice was again something which remained with him throughout his life. This brought him into contact with the Justice and Peace group and he led the CAFOD group at St Helen's, Crosby for many years.

He is survived by his wife Sheila, children Rosaleen, Brigid and Peter and grandchildren. May he rest in peace.

Please pray for the repose of his soul.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE
