SVP 1833 in England & Wales
Manchester University
Where we are...
Based in Manchester the group meets every Monday evening at 7.30pm in the university's Catholic chaplaincy. The group was set up by Father Ian Kelly when Sister Brenda Matterson, a Daughter of Charity, gave a talk about Vincentian organisations at the university. Sister Brenda acted as spiritual adviser to the society but has since left; Father Ian has subsequently taken up the role. The society has around twelve active members.

Further Info
Christmas and Easter parties
The Manchester university 1833 group organises parties for elderly people who may not usually have the opportunity to celebrate these events. There is always a hot meal and a chance to socialise with the members of the group and others at the party. Entertainment is enjoyed by all, whether it be Irish folk music, bingo or classical music performances. We try to ensure that everyone leaves with a smile on their face!
Visits
Several members of the society visit elderly people at the Little Sisters of the Poor care home. The visits are to people who may not get many visitors or people who are lonely.
The Hillside Resource Centre for Senior Citizens is an excellent way for Vincentians to get involved in community life. A small group of us organises activities on Wednesday afternoons.
The university is situated right next to Manchester Royal Infirmary and every Christmas members of the group sing carols in the hospital wards for long-term patients.
Fundraising
One of the biggest fundraising days for the university SVP is Pancake Tuesday. Pancakes are sold from the chaplaincy and people from all over the university come and enjoy them. Any money raised is spent on the parties and other works carried out by the group. One of these works is the sponsoring of a young person in India to study an engineering course.
