SVP 1833

“Christianity is not about ideas but about deeds inspired by love.”

Blessed Frederic Ozanam - the Society's Founder

What is SVP 1833?
The St Vincent de Paul Society has recently launched a new initiative aimed at attracting young adults in the 18-30+ age group to become members of the Society and to discover opportunities for living out the Gospel message, by helping those most in need.

"Call yourselves Christians?"
The SVP was founded in France in 1833 by a 20 year old student, Frederic Ozanam, in response to the challenge "What is the Church doing about the poor today?"

Since those early days the SVP has done much to help the poor materially and spiritually and the society is now active in over 130 countries.

Involving the young...
In 1999 the Society initiated the Youth SVP in order to involve young people and to date over 1200 members in schools and parishes have taken part in a range of activities, helping those in need in the local community and developing their own spirituality.

Now the Society is turning it's attention to the over-18s, hoping to channel their talents and skills into serving people in need.

It is hoped that through SVP 1833 we might capture something of the spirit of our founder Frederic Ozanam.

Open to all...
The aim is to set up groups anywhere where young people are, in colleges and universities, or in the workplace. Usually SVP conferences are based in Catholic parishes.

In line with the SVP ethos, SVP 1833 is open to all young adult Christians and anyone sympathetic to the SVP ethos. Similarly we are non-discriminatory when it comes to those seeking help and will help anyone in need, regardless of religious preference or personal background.
